Frank Stones presents the Vale League's Guardian Angels cheque to Cath Southon, deputy sister at York Hospital
GENEROUS cricketers put bat to ball for The Press’s Guardian Angels appeal.
Every run scored by HPH York Vale League batsmen on the weekend of June 28 and 29 was worth 10p to the appeal, which is raising money to build a children’s high-dependency unit at York Hospital.
Although several games on the chosen weekend were called off because of rain, clubs still made donations and ran up a total of £1,006.
The league is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its formation this year and wanted to mark the milestone by helping a worthy cause.
The cheque was presented to Cath Southon, deputy sister at York Hospital children’s ward, by Frank Stones in his final act as Vale League chairman.
Mr Stones, of Reginald Grove, York, has been associated with the league for 50 years as a player, umpire and administrator but will be stepping down at the annual meeting in November.
He and his wife, Pat, each matched ten per cent of the league total, and handed over a further cheque for £200 from their own pockets.
League press officer Martin Jarred said: “It was a fantastic gesture by Frank and his wife. He is a legend in Vale League circles, a real gentleman.”
The Press is now only £5,000 away from reaching its £300,000 target to fund two life-saving rooms with new specialised equipment for youngsters. The unit will be the first of its kind in North Yorkshire.
Piece of Parkin
FORMER HPH York Vale Cricket League stalwart John Parkin has pitched up in Cyprus.
A former press officer for the league, he has emigrated from his home in Barlby to live on the island.
Parkin, a milkman with a round in the Kelfield and Stillingfleet area, wrote the league's weekly reports for the Press between 1995 and 2002 and had a comeback season in 2006.
Although he was deaf he had a long playing career with Fulfordgate as a wicketkeeper batsman and is a vice-president of the league.

Record breaker Dakin
NORTH CAVE fielders on the Thixendale boundary may be advised to wear helmets if the HPH York Vale Cricket League's new record-breaker reaches the crease this afternoon (May 17, 2008).
James Dakin is the man of the moment after his staggering 192 not out rewrote the league record books last weekend.
His amazing innings at Malton & Old Malton is the highest individual score in the league's 75-year history.
The modest 38-year-old from Skirpenbeck, near Pocklington, only plays for Thixendale occasionally and his magical knock was his first on a Saturday this season after scraping just nine runs in two Evening League games.
"I had no idea it was a record. The first hundred was chanceless. After that I just tried to give it everything - I must have been dropped about five times after I reached a hundred," said Dakin, who has been a Thixendale player for five years.
He cleared the Gannock boundary nine times and clubbed 24 boundaries in his epic innings which spanned just 30 overs.
Dakin arrived at the wicket with Thixendale struggling at 36-3 and little hint of the carnage to come. But he has a great cricket pedigree and rolled back the years with an unbelievable display of batting fireworks.
As a star teen batsman with Kendal and an Cumbria Under-16 and Under-19 player, Leicester and Middlesex had shown interest in him as a youngster. At Durham University he played alongside Ronnie Irani and Jeremy Snape, both future England one-day international players. The previous year mathematics graduate Nasser Hussain had been the leading light at Durham.
Since then Dakin has pursued a business career, playing for Banbury, Oxford and Kendal, before moving to Yorkshire.
"I had friends who played for Thixendale, so it made sense for me to join them," he said.
His epic innings has overshadowed Dean Tyler's bowling display against shell-shocked Malton & Old Malton. Tyler took 7-33 as the home side were shot out for 54 as Thixendale romped to a 213-run division three victory.
